Why Murrumbidgee is dying

BY ROSSLYN BEEBY, SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENT REPORTER

The upper reaches of the Murrumbidgee which includes its Snowy Mountains headwaters and 41km flowing through the ACT are among the worst affected.

These sections of the river have few native fish or aquatic insects and are over-run by destructive alien species such as carp and rainbow trout

In contacting a number of folk in CFA and RecFish, this article has prompted a spirited discussion as to whether trout are being unfairly labelled as being ‘destructive’ in the same breath as carp.  Good topic for a discussion topic.

Report from Peter – 8 Jun

Hi William.

went to Eucumbene River below the portal on Friday where I managed to pick up four rainbows all around the 1kg mark and all in excellent nick. I started using two nymphs under an indicator but water was flowing fairly hard and so I ended up using a nymph below a glowbug, but even then had problems keeping it down in the current. All the fish were caught on #20beadhead black nymph and caught between 10000hrs and 1300hrs. Didn't seen any fish upstream from portal entry but a few were spotted in the portal runoff. Also a bit of a hatch occurred and small fish could be seen rising. Almost forgot about the 50cm min limit and the fish in the attachment was put in bag when I realised. Managed to revive it and release it successfully.

Report from Bill – 29 Jun

Haven’t been up night fishing in an age.  Managed to get one nice rainbow hen in a shallow bay of Lake Jindaby ne on the weekend – muddler did the trick.  45cm.

Also landed was a rather upset water rat – is there any trophy for furred creatures?
