Hi William. a couple of pictures from our recent trip to New Zealand.
Stuart on a small island approx 300 metres from
the farm cottage where we stayed fishing the evening rise on the Mataura.
the same time of day and is Ian casting to a
rise at the same location about 50 metres upstream of Stuart Ian caught 2 nice
browns that evening just after dark on his "willow grub" pattern. I
missed an after dark take on a "shaving brush " emerger pattern
whilst Stuart caught a smaller brown on a nymph just b4 darkness on a nymph.
Stuart with a nice fish caught early on our
first morning on the Mataura.
Sunset on the Mataura. Peter's reflection can
be seen on the left and Stuart is fishing on the far right. The famous mad
Mataura rise didn't happen that night but it was a pleasant way to end the day.
Peter and Ian spent the second week of the trip
at Omarama and on the Tuesday they decided to try the upper Ahuriri River,
Peter decided to try upstream where he met a local also named Peter who was
staying at a 5 * lodge on the river and was a friend of a Canberrian that they
met on he previous a Sunday. After being shown how to get across a nasty
(boggy) creek they went their separate ways where Peter using two nymphs under
an indicator hooked into his largest ever trout and eventually landed it about
100 metres downstream of where he hooked it . The brown male was measured at 62
cms and estimated at 6 -6.5 lbs in weight. The fish took a tungsten beadhead
gold ribbed hare’s ear size 20 nymph. Needless to say when Peter finally worked
his way back to Ian a wide smile was visible upon his countenance.
Peter with a beautiful rainbow from the Waitaki.
Fishing guide Wayne Grafton holds a feisty
brown caught by Ian in a shallow backwater of the Waitaki.
Didymo was particularly bad in a section of the
Ahuriri about 10 km above Omarama.
A superbly conditioned rainbow caught by Ian in
the Ahuriri River below Omarama.
44cm Yellowbelly caught on soft plastic (split
tail minnow) in Lake Tuggeranong this morning (26/2/2008)
