'Club' Trip to New Zealand

As discussed in the April meeting, Peter K and Bill had 10 days fishing the Mataura and Waitaki rivers.

Peter with one of his better fish on the Mataura

Bill with a very pretty brown - three in ten minutes in this run.

Bill with his best fish (landed)

Peter onto a good one - check out the water discoloured by didymo on the rocks

Waitaki rainbow - best fish of the trip

Peter's rainbow being revived.

From Bill:

got this 50cm brown last night at Jindabyne. Dropped three others that felt equal or better. This one took me halfway through my backing (hmm, fly line plus half of 200 m equals ...)

Fishing Report

Stuart had fished Eucumbene and felt the lake was down below 10%. He has heard that Snowy Hydro believes they can drain down to 2%. It was noted that in 1954 the lake filled to significant level in less than 18 months - regardless the impact on the fishery of these low levels is of great concern.

Peter K fished the Goodradigbee (lots of campers but little water/few fish). On the Murrumbidgee he spotted some browns feeding on midges.

Mark S has been fishing soft plastics for flathead. Spoke also about 5 1/2 lb brown taken on a backcountry stream - photos in newsletter.

Allan reported that the Thredbo was running clear, but he saw no rises at night on Jindabyne.

Club Events

Allan and Scott were due to conduct the club outing to the Clyde but this was cancelled to due poor weather.

Monaro Streams is due 21-22 Apr. Whilst Peter K is not available to conduct this, he has all the details for accommodation

Closure

After our previous hiccups with laptop/projector it all worked this time.

Bill and Peter K spoke of the 'club' trip to New Zealand (Mataura river and Omarama). Mark S spoke to his earlier trip (Nov last year) fishing streams around Tekapo and at the coast. Geoff also spoke of his New Zealand trip to the northern areas of South Island.
